Honoring Skandmata Devi: The Most Divine Mother

Navratri is a nine-day Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of nine different forms of Goddess Durga. On each of these nine days, a specific form of the goddess is worshipped. Devotees often observe a fast during Navratri to show their devotion and seek blessings from the goddess. The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Skandmata, a gentle and compassionate goddess who is believed to open the doors of salvation. Skandmata is known as the mother of Skanda Kumar Kartikeya and is associated with new consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. According to scriptures, her grace can transform even the most foolish person into a wise one. Worshipping Skandmata is believed to fulfill all desires and it is also said to bless devotees with children.

Skandmata Puja Vidhi


On the fifth day of Navratri:

  1. Morning Rituals: Take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  2. Set Up the Altar: Place the picture or idol of Skandmata on a stool in your temple or place of worship. Purify the area with Ganga water.
  3. Kalash and Resolution: Fill a Kalash with water, add some coins, and place it on the stool. Make a resolution for your worship.
  4. Offerings: Apply roli-kumkum to Skandmata and offer bananas and pure honey as naivedya.
  5. Aarti and Prasad: Perform the Aarti with pure desi ghee and distribute the prasad to everyone in the house.

Skandmata's Appearance and Symbolism:


  • Skandmata is depicted with four arms.
  • In her right upper arm, she holds Skanda Dev in her lap.
  • In her right lower arm, she holds a lotus flower.
  • Her complexion is white.
  • She sits on a lotus flower, hence also known as Devi Padmasana.
  • Her vehicle is a lion.

Skandmata's Story:


According to mythology, the demon Tarakasur could only be killed by Lord Shiva's son. Mother Parvati transformed into Skandmata to train her son Lord Skanda for the war. Skandmata's training enabled Lord Skanda to defeat Tarakasur.


Benefits of Worshipping Skandmata:


Worshipping Skandmata is believed to grant brightness, radiance, and liberation from worldly bonds. Meditating on her with devotion is said to remove all troubles and attain salvation.

सिंहसनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया।
शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कंदमाता यशस्विनी॥

जय तेरी हो स्कंद माता
पांचवां नाम तुम्हारा आता

सब के मन की जानन हारी
जग जननी सब की महतारी

तेरी ज्योत जलाता रहूं मैं
हरदम तुम्हें ध्याता रहूं मैं

कई नामों से तुझे पुकारा
मुझे एक है तेरा सहारा

कहीं पहाड़ों पर है डेरा
कई शहरो मैं तेरा बसेरा

हर मंदिर में तेरे नजारे
गुण गाए तेरे भगत प्यारे

भक्ति अपनी मुझे दिला दो
शक्ति मेरी बिगड़ी बना दो

इंद्र आदि देवता मिल सारे
करे पुकार तुम्हारे द्वारे

दुष्ट दैत्य जब चढ़ कर आए
तुम ही खंडा हाथ उठाए

दास को सदा बचाने आई
‘चमन’ की आस पुराने आई..
